Wednesday, June 14, 2017 by Scott Pagel spagel@tnonline.com in Sports

The Lehigh Valley Connie Mack season is under way already and Coplay’s entry in the league is off to a nice start at 5-2 thus far.

Coplay dropped a 7-5 game to Catty to open the season but then won three-straight contests and sit in a pretty good spot with only seven games played.

The team will be led by several key players who return from last season’s team. Those include: Andrew Snyder (SS), Jake Paachus (pitcher, 3rd), Joe Lisicky, (pitcher, third), Shane Fillman (2nd), Aidan Hoderewski (catcher), Ryan Schmidt (OF), Brandon Gawrys (1st), Kyle Saylor (OF and pitcher) and Kyle Kralick (OF).

There are also several newcomers who will look to make an impact. They are: Derek Buskirk (OF), Chris Perez (OF), Luke Gilbert (2nd), Zach Hartman (3rd), Tim Ritter (1st), Matt Snyder (utility), AJ Capille (pitcher, SS), Ben Hudak (1st), Carlos Lorenzo (OF), Jake Samanka (1st and 3rd) and Kevin Landis (OF).

“It’s a good mix of eighth, ninth and tenth graders,” said head coach John Lisicky.

Lisicky also pointed to Paachus, Hoderewski and Fillman as team leaders.

Balliet Vikings

After successful seasons in the league their first two years, the Balliet Vikings are back again this season.

So far, they are off to a 5-5 start and are made up of players throughout the Lehigh Valley all of which are attending Allentown Central Catholic. Their home games are played at Sammy Balliet Stadium.

Leading the team this season will be juniors Dom Miller, Nick Kernick, Josh LaRock, Matt Miller and Zach Angelstein.

Sophomores are Anthony Shak, George Hlavac, Matt Blazofsky, Sean Brosious, Brian Horoshko, Zach Curto and Steve McGlynn while freshmen are Carter Welch and Rocco Lucci.

The Lehigh Valley playoffs start on July 10, so it’s a lot of games in a short amount of time. Teams who advance past leagues will move on to states to take on teams from the Bux-Mont Connie Mack League. The state playoffs run from July 20-29.

The state all-start game is June 17 at Limeport and the Lehigh Valley All-Star Game is July 8.
