Junior varsity wrestlers compete at tourney
Junior varsity wrestlers across the region took the spotlight last weekend as they competed in their annual tournament that showcases the talent throughout the wrestling-rich Lehigh Valley.
The scene was East Stroudsburg High School as 30 teams competed last weekend in the Ray Nunamaker District XI Coaches association Wrestling Tournament.
The junior varsity tourney features schools who compete in the AA and AAA classifications. The tournament was won by Northampton who finished with 202 points. Whitehall finished eighth, locking up that spot with 52 points.
Competing for the Zephyrs were Wilfredo Jimenez (106), Zach Bevlaby (120), Tim Bizono (126), Aiden Toussaint (132), Sean Cunningham (145), Randy Okungu (195), Tyler Fontanez (195) and JhonAngel Guzman (195).
They once again had a strong contingent of junior varsity wrestlers, many of whom placed in the tournament.
Wilfredo Jimenez had a strong tournament for the Zephyrs. He finished sixth at 106, winning three matches before losing 5-1 to Freedom’s Gabe Ramos in his final bout.
Toussaint had a strong tournament as well, finishing third in his weight class. He won four matches, including a fall in the third-place match over Freedom’s Isaac Medina.
Okungu, who also wrestles varsity, won his first three bouts, placing him the finals against Bethlehem Catholic’s Jarius Rosado. Okungu lost by a fall as Rosado was able to get the pin with time running out in the third period.
Guzman finished third at 195 for the Zephyrs who had three wrestlers competing in the same weight class. He won four matches, including a 7-3 decision over Tamaqua’s Alex Zeigler to finish in the third spot. Fontanez finished fifth in the same weight class, winning four matches. His fifth-place bout pitted him against Dieruff’s Xavier Garcia, emerging with a 5-3 decision over the Husky.
