NY Giants draft Saquon Barkley
The wait was over pretty early on Thursday night all throughout Whitehall - Saquon Barkley is headed to the New York Giants.
The Giants used their first round pick, second overall, to draft the former Zephyr and Penn State running back. The Giants love of Barkley was probably one of the worst-kept secrets in the National Football League heading into draft night. The only question was what were the Browns going to do with the first overall selection.
Once Cleveland announced they were taking Baker Mayfield, a quarterback out of Oklahoma, it didn’t take the Giants long at all to announce their selection of what was considered the top running back in the draft.
The Browns were active in the offseason to improve their offense, trading for QB Tyrod Taylor from Buffalo as well as WR Jarvis Landry from Miami to pair with Josh Gordon. The team also signed former 49ers running back Carlos Hyde in free agency, which many felt was a sign they were going to pass on Barkley as the top pick.
Whitehall fans will get to see plenty of Barkley on television, as well as having close access to Giant home games, and of course, the once-a-year trip to Philadelphia.
Barkley joins a Giants team that struggled to run the ball last year, and all the NFL experts immediately said Barkley becomes what is now a rare commodity in the NFL - a three-down running back. The G-men signed former Patriot tackle Nate Soldier in the offseason in what they hope will provide a big boost to the offensive line.
Current Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. took to Twitter Thursday night to make a prediction about Barkley saying his new teammate will “be the number one sellin Jersey in American next year.”
We’ll have local NFL Draft coverage and fan reaction in next week’s edition of the Whitehall-Coplay Press.
