Summer breakfast camp off to good start
On May 20, a kickoff party for Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative’s summer breakfast camp was held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fullerton. The camp began June 18 and will be held every day all summer until Aug. 24. The program runs daily 8:30-10:30 a.m.
Twenty children, two teenage volunteers, members of Peace by Piece (who furnished the food and activities), family members and adult volunteers attended the party. Hot dogs and pizza were served.
There were games with prizes and free time to play ball and Red Rover. The children renewed friendships from last summer and made new friends. One child was overheard saying, “I haven’t seen you since last summer,” when meeting up with a friend from last year.
Parents were asked to register their children for this summer and also met with other parents and volunteers.
During the free summer breakfast camp, the children will be served breakfast, have time to read, enjoy organized crafts and activities and participate in some free time to play each day. They also will receive a packed lunch to take home, and on Fridays, they will receive extra food for the weekend.
This year, the camp is expanding to three locations to better serve the children of Whitehall and Coplay. Besides the location at St. John’s, there will be a summer breakfast camp at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Egypt, and Redeemed Christian Church of God, Coplay. Programs and activities, as well as the dates and times, will be similar at all three locations.
