QMC Leonard W. Burkhart USN-RET, 70, of Allentown, died July 1, 2018, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of Doris (Ettl) Burkhart Kale of Spring City and the late Frank R. Burkhart and a stepson of the late Lester E. Kale.

He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where he played football and later was a sports team photographer.

He was in the U.S. Navy and was in the reserves during the Vietnam era. He received his certificate of retirement from the Armed Forces April 23, 2008.

He was a professional photographer and owner of Allentown Custom Photography. He worked as a substitute teacher in many local districts.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Allentown.

He was a member of various veteran organizations including Greater Allentown VFW Post 13.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Jane E. and her husband James Fritchman of Effort; a nephew, Richard; a niece, Christina and her husband Eric Serfass; a nephew, Andrew and his wife Karen Fritchman; a great niece, Kayle; a great nephew, Jameson; and stepsisters and their families.

He was predeceased by a brother, Frederick; and a sister and brother in law, Kathleen D. and Dennis Deutsch.

Contributions may be made to an animal charity or a veterans organization of one’s choice.
