Bret Legath, of Coplay, received a $500 scholarship from the Coplay Scholarship Fund following a brief ceremony Dec. 26, 2018, at Paulie’s Family Restaurant, 1214 Chestnut St.

Legath is a freshman at Shippensburg University. The 2018 Whitehall High School graduate is also a member of the Shippensburg football team. An elementary education major, he plans a career as an educator.

He resides on Fifth Street with his parents, Rich and Lisa.

Legath was required to submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words, answering the prompt “What Local Government Means to Me.”

The Coplay Scholarship Fund committee was founded in 2001 by former Mayor Bill Leiner Jr. The fund has granted thousands of dollars in scholarships since its inception.

When asked if he ever thought about a career in politics, Legath said, “Not really. I tend to say what I think.”
