Information night at Gockley
It was standing room only Jan. 23 as Whitehall-Coplay School District parents filled the Gockley Elementary School cafeteria for kindergarten parent information night.
The 2019-20 school year will be the first year of districtwide full-day kindergarten at Gockley Elementary. The district is planning to hire five or six new kindergarten teachers, and six new modular classrooms will be added in July or August. These classrooms, each with its own bathroom, will be connected by an enclosed hallway.
Denise Saylor, principal at Gockley, introduced herself to parents and played a slideshow highlighting the activities each kindergarten class has participated in during the year.
Parents and students had the opportunity to tour the school and visit kindergarten classrooms, as well as speak to the registrar and teachers.
Parents can register their students by visiting the website, whitehallcoplay.org, where they will create an account and set an appointment to meet with Michelle Khouri, district registrar. Parents will then need to bring their child’s proof of birth, immunization records and proof of residency to the transportation building, 2640 Campus Drive.
After enrollment is approved, parents will be given an appointment to finish the registration process at Gockley between April 8 and 10, where they will have the chance to meet the teaching staff, a nurse, a guidance counselor and a reading specialist, who will complete an assessment.
Students registering for kindergarten must be 5 years old before Sept. 1, 2019.
The school district’s first day of the 2019-20 school year is Aug. 26. The date of kindergarten orientation has not been set but will be several days before the start of the school year.
Questions regarding kindergarten registration should be referred to Khouri at 610-437-4780, ext. 1014. She can be reached 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday though Friday or by email at email@example.com.
