School board members take oaths of office

Grim, Fonzone re-elected as president, VP; Williams named CLIU trustee

At the Whitehall-Coplay School Board reorganization meeting held Dec. 3, Patty Gaugler, Dr. Nichole Hartman (replacing Owen Eberhardt Jr.), Tina Koren, William Leiner and George Makhoul took the oaths of office as elected board members.

Wayne Grim was re-elected president of the board, with William Fonzone Sr. also retaining his seat as vice president. Both votes were unanimous.

At the special school board meeting that followed, the board approved the appointment of school board member George Williams to the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 Board of Trustees.

The board approved field trip requests for the boys basketball team to travel to Loyalsock High School in Loyalsock, Lycoming County, Dec. 6-7, at no cost to the district; the wrestling team to travel to Newark, Del., to participate in the Beast of the East Tournament Dec. 20-22, at no cost to the district; and the Whitehall High School baseball and softball teams to travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to participate in the Ripken Experience March 18-22, 2020, at no cost to the district.

The board also approved a field trip request from Samantha Neas, Science Olympiad adviser, for the Science Olympiad team to travel to Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, Chester County, to compete in a tournament Jan. 4, 2020, at the cost of one bus. A second request was approved for the team to travel to Garnett Valley Middle School in Glen Mills, Delaware County, to compete in a tournament Jan. 25, 2020, at the cost of one bus.

Also approved was a field trip request from Edward Hong, choir director, for WHS choir members to travel to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., May 2-6, 2020, at the cost of two buses, to and from Philadelphia International Airport.

New district appointments include Michael Maggio, WHS biology long-term substitute teacher, at the rate of $150 per day; Christina Portalatin, WHS life skills paraprofessional, at the rate of $19.15 per hour; Ramia Arnouk, districtwide English Language Learners paraprofessional, at the rate of $18.03 per hour; and Lama Fares, districtwide long-term substitute English Language Learners paraprofessional, at the rate of $18.03 per hour.

The board approved Neil Chaban as WHS spring musical pit musician and spring musical rehearsal accompanist, at $540 for each.

The board approved a third-party procurement specialist services contract between Clearvu School Services LLC and Whitehall-Coplay School District.

Also approved was the electrical contract extension between WGL Energy Services Inc. and WCSD.

The next school board meeting will be 7 p.m. Dec 9.

Committee meetings, including finance/personnel, education/student activities and operations/transportation, will be 4 p.m. Dec. 16.
