Whitehall resident turns 100
Gordon Higgins, of Fellowship Courts, Whitehall, celebrated his 100th birthday Feb. 22 with family and friends in attendance.
He was born in 1920 in Trenton, N.J. His family lived in Robbinsville, N.J., and he graduated from Allentown High School, New Jersey.
He joined the U.S. Army soon after Pearl Harbor, and his anti-aircraft unit saw combat in Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, Southern France and Germany.
He married Olive Dammers in 1951, and they celebrated 69 years of marriage.
Higgins worked for Mercer Rubber Company in Hamilton Square, N.J.
He was active in local politics, serving on the school board, planning commission and township committee and as deputy mayor of his hometown.
Upon retirement, the couple moved to Ormond Beach, Fla., where they resided for 23 years. They have called Whitehall home for the last 13 years.
The couple has one daughter, Debbie Nagy, of Allentown, two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
The attendees for his birthday enjoyed games relating to the 1920s and an Italian luncheon.
