Coplay Borough hires new police officer
Based on a recommendation from Coplay Borough Police Chief Vincent Genovese at the March 10 council meeting, Coplay hired a new police officer to replace Officer Kevin Torres, who is transferring to Pittsburgh. The new officer, Lauren Fizz, is going through orientation and on-the-job training.
In other business, council is reviewing plans for a public works building on property it owns at 1 Bridge St. The new building has been under consideration for some time. One aspect of the plan is to include a new municipal building in the package. The initial look at costs last year had the municipal building pushing the budget limit.
Council will look closely at the location of a Verizon 5G antenna. The higher frequency needed for 5G requires the antenna be closer to the sending device (your cellphone). Cellphone antennae and the equipment needed to run them are considered a utility and cannot be unduly restricted by local ordinances. Council is waiting on a map of the proposed locations to ensure the units are not an eyesore. In its presentation, Verizon indicated there is some latitude in the location that would not affect the quality of the 5G signal.
