Phoebe makes two appointments

Michell Staska-Pier, RN, MBA, NHA, was appointed to the position of Vice President, Health Care Services for Phoebe Ministries.

Staska-Pier provides oversight, direction, and strategy to support innovation and delivery of services at the four Phoebe Continuing Care Retirement Communities.

October LV house sales decline

Sales of houses in the Lehigh Valley declined in October.

Closed sales for houses in the Lehigh Valley declined 5.5 percent in October, with 703 houses sold, compared to 744 houses sold in October 2018, according to the Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors (GLVR) monthly report released Nov. 13.

The decline followed an increase in closed sales for houses in September.

Closed sales for the 10 months of 2019 are up slightly, 0.7 percent, to 7,213, compared to 7,166 for the 10 months of 2018.

Lehigh Valley house sales rebound; up 1.3 percent in September

Sales of houses in the Lehigh Valley rebounded in September.

Closed sales for houses in the Lehigh Valley increased 1.3 percent in September, with 699 houses sold, compared to 690 houses sold in September 2018, according to the Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors (GLVR) monthly report released Oct. 14.

The upturn reversed a two-month decline in house sales in the Lehigh Valley.

Closed sales for the nine months of 2019 are up slightly, 0.9 percent, to 6,479, compared to 6,422 for the nine months of 2018.

St. Luke’s University Network to open new pediatric care unit

St. Luke’s University Health Network plans to open a new, eight-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St. Luke’s University Hospital - Fountain Hill in early 2020.

The new unit is part of an expansion dedicated to improving pediatric health care in the region and providing advanced care to critically-ill children close to home. In addition to adding pediatric critical-care specialists, the expansion includes several new pediatric subspecialists and primary care physicians.

LVH Cancer Center adds staff doctor

Christine Kim, MD, board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology, has joined the staff at the Dale and Francis Hughes Cancer Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) - Pocono, East Stroudsburg, and at the Cancer Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) - Muhlenberg, Bethlehem.

Kim is joining Martin Martino, MD, and M. Bijoy Thomas, MD, with LVPG Gynecologic Oncology. Kim specializes in robotic surgery and treatment of cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, uterine cancer, benign gynecologic conditions and endometriosis.

LVHN hospitals honored by HAP for patient safety

Five Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) hospitals are being honored as part of the inaugural class of The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania’s (HAP) Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition program.

Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) - Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township; LVH - Muhlenberg, Bethlehem; LVH - Hazleton, Hazleton; LVH - Pocono, East Stroudsburg, and LVH - Schuylkill, East Norwegian Street, Pottsville, received HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition for 2018.

‘Fall Job Fair’

Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) hosts a “Fall Job Fair,” 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Nov. 7, Lisa Scheller Community Services Center (CSC) on the college’s main campus in Schnecksville.

LCCC students and alumni are encouraged to attend. The public is also invited.

Bring resumes and wear professional attire.

More than 100 local and regional employers’ representatives are expected to be available to discuss full-time, part-time, seasonal and internship opportunities.

Lehigh Valley Health Network names Chief Wellness Officer

Joseph Patruno, MD, board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN), has been named Chief Wellness Officer of Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN).

“Physician burnout is a vexing problem,” Thomas Whalen, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of LVHN, said.

In the 2019 Medscape National Physician Burnout Report, 44 percent of physicians reported feeling burned out. Whalen said Patruno was appointed Chief Wellness Officer to address this pressing issue and promote well-being among health-care professionals.

Scheller Scholarships expanded for high school students at LCCC

High school students from the nine school districts in Lehigh County will have additional financial support to receive a college degree from Lehigh Carbon Community College while still in high school, thanks to funds from the Lisa Jane Scheller Technology Scholarship.

“The Scheller Early College Scholarships are a perfect example of combining funds from a private donor to leverage scholarships and move students into the pipeline of higher education early,” said LCCC president Dr. Ann D. Bieber.
