Children’s author Jan Brett visits Emmaus High School

In partnership with the staff of Emmaus High School’s Collage literary magazine, Let’s Play Books!, 244 Main St., Emmaus, hosted a presentation and book signing by children’s author Jan Brett Nov. 30.

Brett, who considers herself “more illustrator than author,” arrived at EHS in what one news release described as her “rock star bus.”

The stop was part of the first leg of a national tour to promote her latest book, “The Tale of the Tiger Slippers.”

County has new voting system

The League of Women Voters of Lehigh County focused on the county’s new voting machines at its Sept. 9 Hot Topics luncheon. Speakers Timothy A. Benyo, chief clerk to the Lehigh County Elections Board, and Terri Harkins, deputy chief clerk, provided a clear explanation of the new voting process.

To promote election security, Gov. Tom Wolf ordered that all counties must have new, secure voting machines by 2020.

Annual event honors the legacy of Ben Yorgey

On July 20, friends, family and Ben Yorgey Foundation scholarship recipients past and present gathered at Macungie Memorial Park for The Ben Event.

This year marks the 10th memorial celebration of the life of Ben Yorgey, an intellectually disabled young man whose personal warmth enriched the lives of everyone he met. The event also generates education funds for students with special needs across the Lehigh Valley

In his honor, the Ben Yorgey Foundation recognizes and provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors with intellectual disabilities.

Local pilot says ‘Sully’ is highly accurate portrayal

The movie “Sully” focuses on a trained professional who becomes a hero due to unfortunate circumstances.

Chesley Burnett “Sully” Sullenberger III, a commercial pilot, faced a crisis with calm professionalism, saved the lives of those entrusted to him and endured intense unmerited criticism.

After viewing the film, Salisbury Township resident and former pilot Richard Fried gives it a thumbs up and states “[the movie] was very accurate.”

Local drummers catching beat with Carolina Crown

Top-notch drum and bugle corps draw talent from foreign countries as well as all 50 states. Consequently, finding three drummers from the Lehigh Valley marching with the Carolina Crown, a South Carolina-based drum and bugle corps, is most unusual. This group has been consistently ranked among the top three corps throughout the 2016 season.

Cody Gross, of Whitehall, performs on the snare drum. Nick Kochanek, of Emmaus, plays bass drum one. And John Panza, also of Emmaus, handles bass three.

In a sophisticated, technologically advanced society, the age-old concept of miracles is often met with a sneer. However, physicians and staff at Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Hazleton and Cedar Crest campuses, Justin Smith and the Smith family believe in those age-old concepts.

On Jan. 18, Smith, his family and his caregivers reunited at several hospital-sponsored news conferences to commemorate and to celebrate Smith’s return to health.
