Lloyd takes over at Northwestern

Thursday, June 4, 2020 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Jerry Lloyd had a standout high school basketball career at Whitehall High School in the 1990s. He scored over 1,500 points and was an EPC Most Valuable Player on teams that won two conference championships and a District 11 championship. In that district championship game, Lloyd hit a game-winning three-pointer with time running out to beat Parkland in five overtimes. After high school, Lloyd attended Mount St. Mary’s and is fifth all-time in three-pointers at the school.

American Hockey League (AHL) president and chief executive officer David Andrews last Monday delivered news to teams and fans that wasn’t unexpected but also wasn’t wanted.

The league has officially decided to cancel the remainder of their regular season and the Calder Cup Playoffs for the league because of the coronavirus. The season was suspended March 13 and standings and statistics through March 12 will be considered official for the 2019-2020 season.

Did you catch the IronPigs games over the weekend? Great couple of games as the ‘Pigs opened the home portion of their season with two wins over the Pawtucket Red Sox.

No, the games weren’t real, but they were as real as you can get. The IronPigs, working with Service Electric and WFMZ-TV 69, put together a pair of virtual Opening Day – technically called #HopeningDay – games against Pawtucket, who would have been their opponent for the first weekend series of the season.

Eyes still on young Phantom players

Thursday, March 5, 2020 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

While the Phantoms have basically no hopes of playing in the postseason, the players have to be aware that they are always on the stage and seeking to open eyes. Times like these are when players can stand apart somewhat by putting out strong efforts even though they know the team won’t really benefit by gaining a spot in the postseason. The Phantoms have a couple guys who are looking to show off what they can do as the AHL season heads into the home stretch.

Trades could impact LV

The NHL trade deadline arrives on Monday. So, what does that have to do with the Phantoms? Possibly a lot.

When you make an addition via trade in sports, there’s a subtraction that goes with it and the subtraction could conceivably come from among the Phantoms roster. Of course, trades in the real sports world aren’t like the trades pulled off in the world of fantasy sports where “owners” just talk to a friend and work out some zillion-player blockbuster trade. In the real world, there are things like salary caps, player contracts and locker room chemistry.

Phantoms looking to make playoff push

Wednesday, February 5, 2020 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

The Phantoms went through the first three months of the season without shutting out an opponent. In that stretch, their opponents shut them out three times, including once in back-to-back games.

Lehigh Valley got its first shutout of the season on Jan. 11 with Alex Lyon in goal and the next night, Jean-Francois Berube shutout Charlotte to give them back-to-back shutout wins. A week later, Berube added another shutout against Rochester and he collected his third shutout of the season Saturday against Hershey.
