Allentown man charged in 2016 bank robbery

Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin announced March 28 that an Allentown man has been charged in relation to a bank robbery that occurred in Whitehall in May 2016.

According to the news release from the DA’s office, John Cruz, 41, of 209 N. Fourth St., Allentown, has been charged with one count each of robbery/threat of serious bodily Injury, a felony of the first degree, and robbery/making a demand of an employee of a financial institution, a felony of the second degree.

Eckhart enters race for county executive

Lehigh County Controller Glenn Eckhart has announced his intent to seek the Republican nomination for Lehigh County executive. He made his special announcement at Big Woodys, Allentown, Feb. 27.

Eckhart has been a school board member, township commissioner and county commissioner and is currently the Lehigh County controller.

“Now I want to be your county executive,” Eckhart said.

Eckhart has been serving the community for nearly 20 years.

Woman’s Club honors Yenser as Girl of Month for February

Emily Yenser has been named February Girl of the Month by the Woman’s Club of Whitehall.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Yenser of Whitehall, she is a senior at Whitehall High School.

She has earned honor roll or high school roll all marking periods.

Yenser is a member of Leo Club, Outdoors Club, Zephyr Nation, Key Club, SERVE Club, Art Club, Model UN, Human Rights Club, Spanish Club, SADD and the girls soccer and tennis (captain) teams.

Tran named January Girl of Month

The Woman’s Club of Whitehall has named Maria Tran its Girl of the Month for January.

A senior at Whitehall High School, she is the daughter of Thanh and Huong Tran of Whitehall.

She earned honor roll or high honor roll all marking periods.

Tran is a member of Leo Club (president and blood drive chairperson), Art Club (president), Outdoors Club, Human Rights Club (president), Model UN and girls tennis team.

High school students win at SkillsUSA

On Feb. 1 at Agri-Plex in Allentown, more than 400 students competed in 54 hands-on skill and leadership competitions. This Showcase of Skills provided a unique opportunity to observe some of the most talented career and technical education students in the area.

District gold medal winners advance to state and potentially national competitions. This year, the SkillsUSA Council partnered with postsecondary educational institutions and area businesses to award more than $167,000 in scholarships and prizes to the medalists of eight competitions.

Osborne enters race for county executive

Gathered in a packed room at Cetronia Fire Company’s social hall — minutes from where he grew up — Lehigh County Commissioner Brad Osborne announced his candidacy to become the Lehigh County’s next executive.

“People want their government to work for them,” Osborne said. “I will bring a disciplined and transparent government with a ‘let’s get it done’ attitude to Lehigh County.”

Marty Nothstein, chair of Lehigh County Board of Commissioners and Olympic gold medalist, introduced Osborne.

Leiner considers entering race for 15th District seat

Rene Miletics, chair of the Friends of Bill Leiner committee, has announced the group is engaged in an exploratory effort for the entry of Bill Leiner Jr. into the 2018 Democratic primary for the U.S. House 15th District.

The seat is currently held by Republican Charlie Dent.

According to Miletics, in the news release, Leiner has a 20-year career as an elected official. Currently, he is a Whitehall-Coplay School Board director and board treasurer.
