Thursday, March 15, 2018 by NICK HROMIAK in Sports

Despite the snow we had, the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s fleet of trout stocking trucks are on a roll. They’ve been planting trout in area streams and lakes for the regional season opener March 31. There’s also the Mentored Youth Trout Opener March 24 where kids get a chance to catch a trout or two before the crowds of opening day take over.

Outdoors: Snow geese are back in the area

Wednesday, February 28, 2018 by NICK HROMIAK in Sports

If you’re a snow goose hunter, or just a wildlife photographer, you both can shoot thousands of snow geese by trekking on down to upper Berks County.

There’s a large field behind Sittler’s Golf Center and Haldeman Ford on Route 222 outside Kutztown and on Kutztown Road. As I drove past there at 12:20 p.m. last week, the field behind these two businesses was a sea of white, that on first view took on the appearance of snow. But instead, was a few thousand snow geese feeding there with smaller flocks continuing to come in from the East to join them.

This inspirational story comes to us from the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP), which we did a column on a few years back.

Locally, the Swain School in Allentown, Defranco Elementary School in Bangor, Bangor Area Middle School and Bangor Area High School are involved in the program. The sport affords an opportunity for youngsters who don’t care to or can’t participate in ball sports, be a part of the scholastic sports environment.

Great American Outdoors Show approaching

Wednesday, January 24, 2018 by NICK HROMIAK in Sports

Mark your calendar for Feb. 3-11, the dates for the largest consumer outdoors show in the world.

The Great American Outdoor Show rolls into the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg and it’s the most comprehensive outdoor show you’ll ever attend. For us folks here in the Southeast, we refer to this extravaganza as “the Harrisburg show” because it’s been well known over the years and there’s none like it or even comes close to it.
