Don Hunt Memorial Soccer games announced

Thursday, August 9, 2012 by The Press in Sports

The Super 2 Challenge, as it has unofficially been called, began in fall of 1998 as a result of the break-up of the East Penn Conference.

In desperate need of independent games for the 1998-99 season, the five remaining conference members (Allen, Becahi, CCHS, Dieruff and Emmaus) developed a challenge concept pitting the EPC against the Philadelphia Catholic League in a variety of sports. The sports selected for that first year were cross-country, field hockey, boys soccer, boys basketball, girls basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball and track.

Something 'Wild' at cinema

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 by The Press in Focus

One of the pleasures of summer movie-going is discovering a less-trumpeted movie amidst the summer blockbusters.

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" is one such film.

The film's intriguing title reveals little. Even after seeing the film, you may not be able to describe what you have seen. However, you will know you've had an extraordinary film-going experience.

"Beasts" tells the story of six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané "Nazie" Wallis), a motherless child. The parenting skills of her father, Wink (Dwight Henry), border on child abuse.

Opinion: another view

Good advice from What's-his-name

It's hopeless.

At a summer carnival or on a stop at the grocery store, I see an acquaintance across the lawn or down the aisle. I offer a warm smile and a "Hey, how are you?"

A friendly conversation ensues and all the while I am frantically trying to remember the person's name and sometimes even how I met her.

If I am lucky, she will steer the conversation in the direction of recalling a shared event or a mutual friend, helping me to recall where we met, but still, the name is often mystifyingly gone. It comes back to me on the drive home.
