Softball will make D-11 playoffs

Thursday, May 7, 2015 by STEVE ANDRES in Sports

Last Friday proved to be prosperous for the Whitehall softball team as well, joining their campus brethren in a trip to the postseason after a come-from-behind win.

Their entree also came at the hands of division rival Northampton, a team that had beaten them 3-2 earlier this season in a rain-shortened game. Since that second-week loss to the Kids, the Zephs have gone 11-3, and are also in the mix for a league playoff spot as well.

The Whitehall track and field team closed out its regular season with a sweep last week, putting a big exclamation point on another successful year.

While they ended the year on a high note defeating Freedom and Pocono Mountain West High Schools, both the boys and girls were hoping to change the course of history when they met Parkland High School (9-1) the day before in their annual battle between the cornfields.

With the recently completed Allentown School District Invitational, the Whitehall track and field team got a little taste of what's in store for them in the upcoming postseason.

The annual ASD meet serves as a primer for both the league and district meets, serving as a barometer of where individuals and relay teams stand as the league and district championships approach.

Tennis hopes to build for future years

The Whitehall boys tennis team wrapped up their regular season this week on a positive note, laying the groundwork for a solid future.

The season culminated with two consecutive wins for the Zephs, defeating Jim Thorpe and William Allen to finish the year at 3-10.

While it wasn't quite the year that head coach Austin Berg envisioned, his team battled every time they stepped on the court.

Berg said he was a bit disappointed, primarily because the weather forced a lot of cancellations that interrupted their ability to maintain any consistency.

With the conclusion of the Northeast Regionals, the Whitehall wrestling season drew to an end, closing the door on another successful season.

The Zephs finished the season at 15-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. Along the way, they had three wresters place at the District XI 3A Individual Wrestling Championships, with two of those wrestlers emerging from the district tourney to place fifth at the Regionals.

Zephs win 2 vs. Nazareth

Thursday, April 30, 2015 by STEVE ANDRES in Sports

The Whitehall baseball team took a step in the right direction toward a district playoff berth with Monday's doubleheader sweep over Nazareth.

The two wins against the Blue Eagles ended a four-game losing streak, and now puts the Zephs firmly in control of their own destiny.

They're currently 9-7, and with four games remaining on their schedule, they'll need to win one of those four to secure a spot. Those include three games against division opponents, each of whom defeated the Zephs in their first meeting, plus powerful St. Peter's Prep from New Jersey.

After running in three races apiece earlier in the afternoon, Gabe Lamm and Decontee Krayee were able to leisurely walk into the infield at the Zephyrs Sports Complex to have their pictures taken in celebration of senior day.

Lamm and Krayee were among 46 seniors honored toward the conclusion of Monday's meet with Nazareth Area High School, and were instrumental in helping lift the Zephyrs to another victory, sweeping the Blue Eagles as the boys won 88-62, while the girls came out on top, 95-55.

Boys fall to Emmaus

It seems what happened in Myrtle Beach didn't stay in Myrtle Beach.

When the Whitehall baseball team arrived at the resort community to kickoff the 2015 season, their bats didn't exactly tear it up as they were taking a lot of strikes.

They were able to overcome that quickly, scoring 28 runs in their next three games. However, their last three league games have resulted in just three runs, losing 12-2 to Stroudsburg on April 15, 11-1 to Parkland on April 17, and 5-0 to Emmuas on Monday.

Tennis season winding down

Thursday, April 23, 2015 by STEVE ANDRES in Sports

As the Whitehall boys tennis team winds down their regular season, they can look to some recent matches as building blocks for the future.

While wins have been hard to come by, the incremental steps the team has taken has started to show.

Peering inside their 1-10 record reveals a team that is winning games and matches, while also stretching their opponents to the brink, and for a young team that experience is crucial.
