District news: Jacky Mansour earns scholarship

Congratulations to Jacky Mansour for receiving the Youth Volunteer Scholarship for her volunteerism with Whitehall High School’s SERVE Club.

Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley is honoring Lehigh Valley volunteers for the work they have done with local nonprofits at the 2018 Breakfast for Champions, to be held April 12 at Renaissance Allentown. Each recipient was nominated by Lehigh Valley nonprofit representatives who thought the volunteer’s service was above and beyond, and the judging panels thoughtfully reviewed each submission.

District news: Whitehall-Coplay School District students off for spring break

Schools will be closed for spring break from March 30 through April 2.

PSSA testing will begin next week for grades 3 through 8. The state testing will go on for two weeks.

Fourth grade will have an additional week for science testing. It is very important students do their very best to attend school during these dates.

Be sure to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast. Also, it is important to be on time and prompt arriving to school.

The end of the third marking period is April 5. Report cards will be available approximately April 12.

Whitehall-Coplay Middle School students discuss contest win

The Whitehall-Coplay Communities that Care (CTC) group was treated to a special presentation at its March 16 meeting.

Three of the Whitehall-Coplay Middle School students who participated in the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” video contest attended the meeting. Myles Fleming, Zachary Kinney and Jerry Lin talked about their experience working on the project. WCMS won the Outstanding Career Pathway Award for its work with Follett LLC.

PBS 39 hosts school safety talk

Local politicians, school superintendents, law enforcement, an advocacy group and high school students came together for a discussion on school safety March 1 at PBS 39’s studio.

National Rifle Association (NRA) representatives declined to attend the forum in Bethlehem, even though they were invited, according to host and moderator Tracy Yatsko. An empty chair on the stage represented the absent pro-gun organization, Yatsko said.
