The EPC announced playoff matchups for soccer and field hockey on Thursday.

In boys soccer, Liberty gets the top seed and a home game against Eastburg South, the 8 seed, on Saturday at 12 p.m.. The winner gets Easton (4) or Stroudsburg (5), who play Saturday in Easton at 10 a.m.

On the bottom of the bracket, Emmaus gets the two seed and hosts seventh-seeded Freedom, last year’s District 11 champs. That game is 2:15 p.m. Saturday with the winner playing the Parkland (3)-...

Field hockey gets big win over Stroudsburg

Thursday, October 3, 2019 by STEVE ANDRES in Sports

Head coach Jennifer Bodnar was looking for that signature win this season, and her field hockey team delivered in a big way last Thursday night against Stroudsburg.

Riding a stretch in which they had won three out of their last four games, Bodnar was still looking for them to post a win against a team with a .500 mark or better.

What she found was a team ready to step up to that challenge last Thursday at the Zephyrs Sports Complex, shutting down the Mounties who were 7-4...

Thursday, October 3, 2019 by SCOTT PAGEL in Sports

Some fall sports postseasons are already under way as the golf and tennis got a head start.

In tennis, the District 11 singles tournament started Monday. Noel Yacoub and Natalia Pedraza took part but both lost in their opening round matches.

Pedraza didn’t make it easy on her opponent though, taking the first set 6-4 before falling in set two by the same 6-4 score. The third set didn’t end until Freedom’s Isabella Szmodis came out an 11-9 winner.

Yacoub had a tough draw...

The Whitehall boys soccer team is currently fourth in District XI standings at a record of 10-4-1.

The Zephyrs had won five-straight games since their very competitive 4-1 loss to a good Parkland squad and before a 2-0 loss to Northampton on Monday night. On Sept. 28, the boys team took on a struggling Nazareth squad and came home with a 4-2 victory.

Coach Chris Bastidas commented on his teams play.

“Kresstoph Whittick is playing like the MVP of the league,” Bastidas...

Outdoors: Additional hunting days scheduled

Thursday, October 3, 2019 by NICK HROMIAK in Sports

Deer and bear hunters are in for some changes this season, with most offering additional hunting days afield.

Now that the statewide archery deer hunting season gets underway this Saturday (Oct. 5), it also spells the time junior license holders can hunt squirrels and rabbits until Oct. 19. Juniors can also hunt ring-necked pheasants from Oct. 12-19.

But the big news is that for the first time in 50 years, the regular firearms deer hunting season will open on a Saturday after...

Zephyrs fall to Becahi on Saturday

Thursday, October 3, 2019 by JAKE MELUSKEY in Sports

On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Whitehall football team took on Bethlehem Catholic at BASD Stadium.

Whitehall (0-6) quickly fell behind after a couple big plays by Bethlehem Catholic’s myriad of skill players. Whitehall’s senior running back Ali Barkley carried the ball several times for the Zephyrs, but could not find running room all day.

Whitehall quarterback Quinn Wentling was able to connect with senior receivers Anthony Nanoah and Allen Negrette on a few big plays,...

Pete’s Top-10: A new number-one this week

Thursday, October 3, 2019 by PETER CAR in Sports

Last week we saw Nazareth fall for the first time this season. Was it the eventual slip that most teams in the EPC face, or are there cracks in the foundation?

The lone EPC team to remain undefeated is Easton following its win over Central Catholic over the weekend, but the Rovers haven’t been truly tested yet.

That changes this week with Freedom coming to town.

Parkland’s win over the Blue Eagles could be a sign they’re gearing up at the right time, while the Colonial...

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms finished up their preseason schedule Monday night at the PPL Center, falling to the Hershey Bears 2-0. Both teams finished the preseason with identical 2-1-0-0 records and look to open the regular season this weekend. For Lehigh Valley, the opener comes at home against Providence Saturday night.

If the preseason showed anything, it was that the goalie situation is going to be a tough one for the Phantoms to figure out. Alex Lyon, J.F. Berube and Felix...

Field hockey aiming for late-season playoff push

Thursday, September 26, 2019 by STEVE ANDRES in Sports

The Whitehall field hockey team has settled into a nice groove midway through the season, putting themselves in position for a district playoff push.

They’ve won three out of their last four games, raising their season record to 4-6. They’ll look to extend that streak with four games this week. The toughest of those tests will be against Liberty who are currently 8-3 as of Sept. 21, along with Stroudsburg who sits at 6-4.

While it’s been a good stretch, head coach Jennifer...
