Volleyball team sweeps Saucon Valley

It was a matter of finding their comfort zone that allowed the Zephyr girls volleyball team to get back into the win column.

It wasn't the kind of "second season" Whitehall head coach George Romano exactly had in mind.

After his team dropped its first game of the season in a 1-0 defeat to Allentown Central Catholic that snapped a 10-game opening-season winning streak last Thursday, Romano decided to begin a "second season" in which his team could possibly begin another winning streak en route back to another invitational to the state title game later this fall.

After a tough, physical game against William Allen High School, the Zephyr field hockey team will try and bounce back against a Liberty squad that made headlines last week.

The Zephs 2-1 overtime loss to the Canaries last week was a game in which their physicality may have cost them, according to head coach Emily Repsher.

"We were a little bit too physical," said Repsher. "We ended up getting [penalty] cards late in the second half and into overtime which set us back."

The Whitehall volleyball team is still trying to find some firm footing as they negotiate the hardwoods of the Lehigh Valley Conference.

The Zephs had another up and down week, winning one match while losing two, dropping their record to 3-8.

It's been that type of year so far for the netters, and they'll have to make a strong push if they want to make the playoffs.

Senior golfer Mark Roth took a swing at qualifying for the District 11 Championships, but came up a bit short to reach the tourney.

Roth qualified for a spot by averaging 78 this season. On Monday's round at the Woodstone Golf Course, Roth shot a 96, missing the cut. The AAA tourney takes the top 20 golfers, plus the conference champions, and Roth missed the mark.

Whitehall head girls' tennis coach Meredith Kester admitted her team recently experienced their most difficult part of their schedule as they begin to conclude their 2012 campaign. The stint left them with an overall 6-8 mark beginning this week.
