Zephs notch first win

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Last Friday's win over Liberty High School by the Zephyr football team was filled with enough subplots to satisfy any number of amateur sleuths.

While it really wasn't a mystery how the Zephs dismantled the Hurricanes 38-19, the plot lines swirling around the game were enough to fill up a good Who-Run-It … er … make that a Who-Done It.

First, it was the Zephyrs home opener and that's always a big deal for a school that's produced a number of renowned football players.

Volleyball team gets by K-Kids

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Whitehall volleyball team experienced some ups and down this week as league play got into full swing.

The up was a five-game thriller against Northampton Area High School. The Zephs battled back from a two-game deficit, winning the last two games to seal the victory. The end result was a 25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-12, toppling of the Kids to earn their first league win.

It was a roller coaster of emotions as they had to fight through that middle stretch that tested...

Kuhn and Tock having great year

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Olivia Kuhn and Nicole Tock etch their names in the annals of Whitehall's girls' tennis program, but fate has brought the duo together for a memorable and surely unforgettable season.

At the end of last week's play, both Kuhn and Tock, the Zephyrs' number three doubles team, had an unblemished 8-0 record and had incurred some obstacles in reaching the peak. It can easily also be considered a remarkable achievement considering this is the first season the duo has played doubles...

Golfers look to finish strong

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With the golf season winding down, the Zephyrs have veered off course, but are now searching for a little momentum on the back three.

The Zephs got off to a fast start, registering two early wins, but since that time, they haven't been able to crack the win column and currently sit at 2-9. With three matches remaining, they would like to knock that total up a stroke, and will look to do that this week against Northampton Area High School.

Head coach Curt Beer said the team's...

Girls piling up the goals

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Whitehall head girls' soccer coach George Romano understands his team can't keep a low profile this season, especially in the ever-competitive Lehigh Valley Conference (LVC).

The Zephyrs have returned a healthy crop of players from last year's Class 3A state runner up squad and haven't really missed a beat. Through their first four games, Whitehall had a sterling 4-0 mark and had outscored their opponents by a 25-2 margin, but they had a tight 2-1 victory over Nazareth.

Boys are off to a 4-0 start this year

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

One of the primary goals for the Whitehall boys' soccer team this fall was to finish games. It was a haunting memory from last year when the Zephyrs got off to a 3-1 start only to finish with an overall 5-13 mark that included a season-ending seven game losing streak.

But to borrow the phrase that was then and this is now.

The Zephyrs have sharpened their gaps from last season and have produced four wins is as many games to begin the season and signal a new dawn ahead.

Girls fall to K-Kids

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

After checking the Whitehall field hockey team's box score against Northampton Area High School, it seemed there was a misprint.

The Zephyrs lost 2-1? Can't be.

That's almost the expectation one gets every time the Zephs take the field. As unrealistic as that is, any time one sees a score in favor of the opposition, a feeling of surprise accompanies the cold statistics.

However, history shows that when the Kids and Zephs meet, it's always a tough game, with numerous...

Boys, girls split home cross country meet

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by The Press in Sports

Whitehall hosted Parkland, Becahi and Easton in its only home meet of the season at the Whitehall Parkway on Tuesday afternoon.

The boys and girls both split, losing to Easton and defeating Becahi. The girls won 28-30 over the Hawks while falling 19-43 to the Rovers, while the boys knocked off Becahi 17-42 and fell to Easton 20-36.

With little fanfare, Polony named starter

Friday, August 24, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

When Chris Polony finally assumed he would be Villanova' starting quarterback this fall, he appreciated the low-key process.

During spring ball, Polony was assigned to the first-team offense and took the most reps among the quarterbacks. So Polony believed it would be safe to assume he would be under center when Villanova opens its season at Temple next Friday night.

It has been the same approach the former Whitehall quarterback has taken since he began as a freshman in the...
