Zephs notch first win

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Last Friday's win over Liberty High School by the Zephyr football team was filled with enough subplots to satisfy any number of amateur sleuths.

While it really wasn't a mystery how the Zephs dismantled the Hurricanes 38-19, the plot lines swirling around the game were enough to fill up a good Who-Run-It … er … make that a Who-Done It.

First, it was the Zephyrs home opener and that's always a big deal for a school that's produced a number of renowned football players.

Volleyball team gets by K-Kids

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Whitehall volleyball team experienced some ups and down this week as league play got into full swing.

The up was a five-game thriller against Northampton Area High School. The Zephs battled back from a two-game deficit, winning the last two games to seal the victory. The end result was a 25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-12, toppling of the Kids to earn their first league win.

It was a roller coaster of emotions as they had to fight through that middle stretch that tested...

Kuhn and Tock having great year

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Olivia Kuhn and Nicole Tock etch their names in the annals of Whitehall's girls' tennis program, but fate has brought the duo together for a memorable and surely unforgettable season.

At the end of last week's play, both Kuhn and Tock, the Zephyrs' number three doubles team, had an unblemished 8-0 record and had incurred some obstacles in reaching the peak. It can easily also be considered a remarkable achievement considering this is the first season the duo has played doubles...

With little fanfare, Polony named starter

Friday, August 24, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

When Chris Polony finally assumed he would be Villanova' starting quarterback this fall, he appreciated the low-key process.

During spring ball, Polony was assigned to the first-team offense and took the most reps among the quarterbacks. So Polony believed it would be safe to assume he would be under center when Villanova opens its season at Temple next Friday night.

It has been the same approach the former Whitehall quarterback has taken since he began as a freshman in the...

Nearly 100 football players along with their family members, friends, and coaches packed the Palmerton High School gymnasium back in June for the Eighth Annual Blue Bomber Football Invitational Weightlifting Competition.

Meet newcomer Whitehall captured the team championship on the strength of six gold, seven silver, and eight bronze medals. The 40 team points earned by the Zephyrs were enough to comfortably better Palmerton and Panther Valley's total of 21 each for the team title....

McFetridge honored 'I thought about packing it in'

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Mike McFetridge remembers participating in a football practice for the first time at Millersville University and experiencing a myriad of emotions and feelings.

McFetridge knew his chances were slim as a walk-on, but he was determined to take the chance, something he had never been afraid of doing.

"When I first got there, I noticed the difference in size and speed of the game," recalled the former Whitehall graduate. "I really didn't know what to expect. I was nervous and...

Girls have busy summer

Thursday, August 9, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

While it was sweltering inside Rockne Hall this summer, the Zephyr girls basketball team found themselves nearly as hot as the temperature inside.

Head coach Rick Worman said the girls "had a pretty good summer" as they participated in three events, beginning with the Allentown Central Catholic Summer League. They also traveled to other schools in the area, playing the equivalent of a full winter schedule, said Worman.

They kicked off this sultry summer playing inside Central's...

Whitehall QB Shafnisky chooses Lehigh

Thursday, August 9, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

Nick Shafnisky didn't want to have a huge weight on his shoulders heading into his senior year at Whitehall.

The top returning quarterback in the Lehigh Valley Conference wanted to get his college destination out of the way before the upcoming 2012 season and Shafnisky decided Lehigh was the best fit for his athletic and academic standards.

With Colgate and New Hampshire as other possible ventures, Shafnisky always knew what place was best for his interests.
