Hottest ticket in town

Thursday, November 14, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Friday Night Lights Permian High School ain't got nothing on Whitehall High and Zephyr Stadium this week.

With the arrival of Parkland High School for the District XI AAAA subregional semifinals, all eyes in the Lehigh Valley will be on the show that kicks off at 7 p.m. this Friday at Zephyr Stadium as the co-champs of the Lehigh Valley Conference meet again, with the winner advancing to the district finals.

It will be a hot ticket, indeed. In fact, it's probably safe to assume...

Parkland ends Zephs season again

Thursday, November 14, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Whitehall head girls' soccer coach George Romano knew it was just one of those games. He wasn't going to mince any words about the outcome either.

For the better part of his team's District 11 Class 3A semifinal against Parkland, his squad had arguably outplayed their opponent in nearly every phase. In fact, Whitehall outshot Parkland, 15-5.

However, Whitehall left the field frustrated in a 2-1 loss. It was the second consecutive year that Whitehall lost to Parkland in the...

Girls season ends with loss to PHS

Thursday, November 14, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Zephyr girls volleyball season ended with the Trojans providing the exodus in the opening round of districts.

Granted, it was a daunting task facing undefeated Parkland High School to kick off the AAA tourney, but the Zephyrs were very familiar with their Lehigh Valley Conference foes, and they have been steadily improving all year.

To underscore that point, the only Lehigh Valley Conference team who was able to take a game from them all year was Emmaus High School. And it...

PHS, WHS meet again

Thursday, November 14, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

When the Parkland football team knocked off Whitehall 21-12 almost two months ago, the defense was able to slow down the effective running game of the Zephyrs.

Ryan Bonshak and Saquon Barkley were held in check for a better part of the game. Bonshak was a nonfactor and, besides a 44-yard touchdown run, Barkley did not see the end zone more than once.

Head coach Jim Morgans hopes that what worked once will work again in favor of his Trojans.

"They are two really good...

WHS rolls past Kids

Thursday, November 7, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Friday's 41-20 win over Northampton Area High School was jam packed with goodies for the Zephyr football team.

First on that list of savory treats was a share of the Lehigh Valley Conference Championship for the second consecutive year.

Pretty tasty, indeed.

Parkland High School held on to beat a tenacious Emmaus team, 37-30, to share the title with the Zephs once again.

Second was the reclaiming of the Cement Bowl trophy, restoring it back in their awards case...

Lamm, Plucinsky end season at states

Thursday, November 7, 2013 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Whitehall High School cross country runner, Gabe Lamm's second trip to the PIAA State Cross Country Championships resulted in a 33 second improvement from last year's time on Saturday at the Parkview Golf Course in Hershey, Pa.

"I came out hoping to medal and hoping to go under 17:00, but the weather just got to me," Lamm said.

On a relatively unseasonably warm day, Lamm placed 76th out of 219 runners in 17:12.

As is typical at the state meet, the start was fast for the...

Field hockey season ends

Thursday, November 7, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The District XI playoffs felt a little like the movie "Groundhog Day" for the Whitehall field hockey team.

It was just a few weeks ago when the Zephs faced William Allen High School and defeated them in overtime, 1-0.

The winning goal was scored by Kourtney Cunningham with 1:21 gone in overtime.

These two teams hooked up in the opening round of the D-11 AAA playoffs Oct. 23, and conventional wisdom indicated it would be another close game.

Try carbon copy.

Zephyrs begin district quest vs. PV

Thursday, November 7, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

When the Zephyrs entertain Pleasant Valley High School this Friday to begin District XI play, the emphasis will be moving some of their granite blocks at the line of scrimmage.

Head coach Brian Gilbert said that the Bears feature a number of lineman who are "really big," with one player who stands 6-5 and weighs 280 lbs. With that much girth to contend with, he said it's imperative to counter that with a strong running attack.

"We need to get some movement on some of their size...

Pete's Top-10

Thursday, November 7, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It's finally playoff time and there aren't many toss-up games this week to factor. The MVC gets to prove if they're worth anything by playing the top two teams in the poll, while Bethlehem Catholic looks to win its first district title since they were 4A in 2001.

Catasauqua takes a major step backward, which is something they've become accustomed to over the past two years this late in the season.

And how can we forget the inclusion of the Eastern Conference playoff picks. You...

Girls run comes to an end

Wednesday, October 30, 2013 by TODD KRESS in Sports

When it comes to District 11 postseason play over the last two seasons, the Parkland girls' soccer team has had Whitehall's number.

The Trojans defeated the Zephyrs in last season's district title game. Unfortunately for the Zephyrs, they met up with the Trojans a year later in this season's district tournament. And the results were similar to those from a year ago, right down to the final score.

During Tuesday night's District 11 3A girls' soccer semifinals, the No. 4 seeded...
