Girls looking for patience

It's been a tough stretch for the Whitehall girls basketball team, and they're going to need a little patience to turn their fortunes around.

After dropping four consecutive games, head coach Rick Worman attributes some of those losses to being impatient on offense. He said they need to hold onto the ball a little longer, looking for an open shot. He chalks some of that impatience on having a young team, so he's hopeful they'll remedy that situation once they gain more experience....

Gilson already eyes return to states

One of Brooke's Gilson's goals for the Whitehall swimming season is to get back to states for the third consecutive season, her last opportunity as she recently began her senior season.

Chances are and barring injury, Gilson will likely return later this winter. In the meantime, she plans to make the most of the season for herself and her Zephyr teammates.

With a solid core returning, Whitehall's girls' team should be a contender for the Lehigh Valley Conference crown.


Bumpy start

With the Holiday season upon us, the Whitehall wrestling team looks to unwrap a few league wins once the break is over.

It's been of a bumpy start for the Zephyrs, losing their opening bout to Bethlehem Catholic High School, 71-6. The lone win was a forfeit at 106. That was followed by another league match as they hooked up with the Konkrete Kids, another perennial Lehigh Valley Conference powerhouse. WHS set for Zephyr Classic

Since the world didn't topple over on December 21, the stage is set for the tip off of the annual Zephyr Holiday Classic which is on tap for tonight.

The affair is scheduled to begin on Dec. 27 when Faith Christian School hosts Saucon Valley High School in the opening game. That contest is followed by the Whitehall boys basketball team facing North Hunterdon (N.J.) at Zephyr Gymnasium.

When the Zephyr boys basketball team opened league play last Friday, they dusted off that old sports axiom and found a way to win.

With the score tied at 31 heading into the final quarter, the Zephs clamped down their defense and amped up their offense, securing a 46-34 over Northampton Area High School win in front of their home crowd to open Lehigh Valley Conference action.

Whitehall sweeps Dieruff in swimming

The Whitehall swimming teams dominated Dieruff in a Tuesday afternoon meet.

The girls swept all events and won 134-36 while the boys picked up their first win in a 94-62 contest. The girls improved to 2-1 on the season while the boys are 1-2.

Brooke Gilson and Alexus Merkert each had district qualifying times in the victory. Gilson's came in the 200 free where she won in 2:01.56 while Merkert's came in the 100 back where she won in 1:05.24.

The Zephyr girls basketball team proved resilient in claiming its first two wins of the season, serving notice they're never out until the clock hits triple zeros.

They won the first of those games against Northampton Area High School 38-34, vanquishing the Kids on their home floor to earn a league and division victory.

Head coach Rick Worman said that his team fought back after a first quarter deficit, utilizing some tough defense to stifle the Kids who had a three-point lead...

On the heels of last year's successful dual meet season, the Zephyr wrestling team will look to get back into the fray and aim toward making a splash in the postseason.

Whitehall finished last year 12-8 (4-4, LVC). They also advanced four wrestlers to the regional round. However, three of those wrestlers were lost to graduation so once again the Zephs will have to climb the mountain with a young team.

This season, Whitehall head swimming coach Pete Rile will be experience a part of the present, and he will also have a good look at the future.

No, the veteran coach hasn't abandoned his pool-side manor for a fortune teller's role, but he does have a roster that can resemble the aspects of one. Rile began the 2012-13 season with nine seniors and 11 freshmen from his girls' squad of 25 swimmers.
