As Saturday, Oct. 5, is the start of the antlered archery deer hunting season in Pennsylvania, bowhunters have two major concerns during the opener.

The first concern is tree stand safety. Every year a few bowhunters fall from their tree stands and incur serious bodily injury either because they didn't wear a safety harness or their tree stand became defective. And despite popular belief, it's not older hunters who fall.

Pete's Top-10: Parkland on top

Wednesday, October 2, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

In a shocking revelation, Emmaus' football team actually showed they had guts and beat a rough and tumble Easton squad.

That's what we took away from week five, as the Rovers were brought back down to reality and Emmaus fans must be thinking 'what if' their first couple of games didn't start so poorly.

Like they say, every dog has its day, and the Hornets had theirs. Bethlehem Catholic is certainly having their time as well and Parkland appears to be the king again as week six...

Cunningham, girls knock off Allen

Wednesday, October 2, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

When the Zephyr field hockey team met the Allen Canaries under the lights Monday evening, Kourtney Cunningham put a little extra charge in the game, unleashing some power of her own to win it in overtime.

With barely one minute gone in the extra session, the Zephs battled a Canary rush that had the ball deep in their territory. And when Erin Everett cleared the ball, the result was a perfect pass to Kourtney Cunningham who raced with the ball toward the goal, eluding an Allen defender...

Zephs beat NHS

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

As they prepared for the Nazareth Area High School, Whitehall head football coach Brian Gilbert said that the Blue Eagles had a habit of trying to get under your skin.

They hit the Eagles with a some big plays (Saquon Barkley's 52-yard run for a...

Pritchard leads Zephyrs with 87

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in Sports

In the game of golf, small mistakes here or there can have a lasting impact on one's final score.

That was the case for two of Whitehall's top golfers during Monday's Lehigh Valley Conference Golf Championships at Bethlehem Golf Club.

Loran Pritchard shot an 87 during the tournament, and finished in 5th place for the girls division. Despite a subpar day on the course in her eyes, she's aware that a few miscues had an effect on her final position.

"I was missing greens a...

Wrestling changes coming at districts

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

District 11 announced that changes to the team wrestling tournament will be under way for the upcoming season. Instead of having 10-team formats in both 3A and 2A, 12-team tournaments will now be used moving forward.

The qualified teams and seeds will no longer be determined by a committee, rather through the power point system that the district has used in most sports over the past two years.

The tournaments will also change from a single-elimination standpoint, to double-...
