Signing Day

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Editor's Note: This is part two of Whitehall's signing day. Part one ran in the June 20 edition.

For Michael Leonhardt, the decision to attend Lehigh University this fall rested squarely on what the school offered academically for the track and field standout. Having investigated other schools that had engineering departments, most had single four-year degree programs.

While they were attractive, Leonhardt opted for Lehigh University since he was accepted into their Integrated...

Fullerton battling the weather, too

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

It seems the weatherman isn't fond of baseball this summer.

The Fullerton Legion baseball team is well aware of that fact. They had two games scheduled for Monday, one of which was the continuation of a suspended game with Emmaus, while the other was a full game against the same team. However, the weatherman threatened more rain over an already waterlogged Henry Glasser Field, forcing the cancellation.

That weather interruption followed Sunday's day-night double header, another...

Repsher is new girls coach

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

When the Whitehall girls basketball team takes the court this winter, there'll be a new face guiding the team on the bench, but the surroundings won't be unfamiliar for the new man in charge.

As a former athletic director at Pen Argyl High School, Dwight Repsher would often fill in for Whitehall A.D. Robert Hartman when duties took Hartman elsewhere. Repsher, who spent 17 years as the Green Knights A.D., described these moments as "game managing," tending to the box office, paying the...

Seven local seniors were named to the PIAA 3A and 2A all-state volleyball teams last week for the boys' season.

Bethlehem Catholic's Evan Blair (OH) and Bryan Brown (setter) both were named to the 2A team, while Emmaus' Gabe Shankweiler (OH), Collin Stanton (OH), Nazareth's Galin Swigart (OH), Parkland's Michael Lewis (setter) and Whitehall's Nick Kuti (OH) rounded out the 3A contingent.

After a memorable season for the Whitehall boys' side, which saw them reach the district...

Gold holds off Red

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

There wasn't much offense, but the 43rd annual McDonald's All-Star Football Classic still provided a punch, literally, for fans on June 20 at Nazareth's Andrew Leh Stadium.

A late game skirmish between both sides, led to the most exciting action on the night, as the Gold team knocked off the Red team 13-8.

A fumble late in the contest, which was recovered by the Red team and brought to the Gold 6-yard line, appeared to give the Red an opportunity to come away with a clinching...

Scoreboard Dedication

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 by The Press in Sports

A scoreboard was recently donated to the Northampton Athletic Association by both the Coplay and Whitehall Giant Food Stores. Giant associates David Snyder, Alison Snyder, John Leitzell and Deb Thomas were on hand to present to Gary Winkle, NAA softball commissioner, and Jeremy Reph, baseball coach and fundraiser chairman, as well as boys and girls of the NAA. The NAA would like to thank Giant for the donation and what they do for the community.

Reunited Coplay Legion benefits from having full squad

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Don't look now, but the Coplay Legion baseball team is rocketing up the standings.

Winners of three consecutive games, the lads from Coplay are now 5-7, and are looking to secure a playoff spot now that the season is in the back stretch.

The launching pad proved to be a full complement of baseball players, a happy turn of events for Coplay manager Louis Falco. "The key is having people back," said Falco. "It's nice to have, two or three extra guys off the bench."

Fullerton headed to the playoffs

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

When they were sitting with a 6-4 record, Fullerton's chances for a playoff spot in Lehigh Valley Connie Mack were sketchy. With a recent four-game winning streak, their chances suddenly have become clearer.

In the final week of the regular season, Fullerton will likely receive either a fifth- or sixth seed when they playoffs begin July 8.

"We definitely have had a pretty good season so far," said head coach Jeff Scheuren. "These guys have really brought it all together for us...

LV falls in finals Mercer County is Cup champs

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

The Carpenter Cup championship concluded just before heavy rain and wind pelted Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon, but the storm that did the real damage came in the fourth inning.

A five-run fourth inning was the most damaging lightning strike for the Lehigh Valley squad, as they could never overcome the deficit en route to a 9-2 defeat to Mercer County.

The Lehigh Valley squad hoped to win their fourth title in franchise history, but an 11-hit effort by...
