Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Zephyr girls basketball team sprang into the win column Tuesday, clipping the Canaries for their fourth win of the year.

Head coach Rick Worman has been looking for offensive consistency all year, and Tuesday's win over Allen provided some of that oomph, winning 46-32 in their Lehigh Valley Conference tilt.

It was a close game heading into the fourth quarter, with the Zephs leading by five. Like their brethren who were hosting the Canaries at Zephyr Gymnasium, the girls...

With one more match on the docket, the Zephyr wrestling team is poised to enter the postseason on a high note.

Winners of their last four of five matches, the Zephs will be looking to build on that success. They've been steadily improving with each meet, and that was evident when they tangled with William Allen High School last week. They dropped their Lehigh Valley Conference counterparts, 48-30 to get their league record to 4-3.

It was their fourth consecutive victory, and...

Patriots top Whitehall boys

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Zephyr boys basketball team was in need of a little boost when they clashed with the Patriots on Tuesday.

It wasn't an energy drink, or a protein bar they were grasping for, but a way to close the gap against a talented Freedom team that bolted out to an early lead. However, they managed to keep it close, staying within striking distance for most of the game.

"For a good portion of the game, it was a five-point game, and it just didn't seem like we could get over that hump...

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Boys knock off EHS

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

As one of the leading authorities on stinginess, Ebenezer Scrooge would be extremely proud of the Whitehall boys basketball team.

Granted, it's a bit late to be hauling out a Christmas reference, but their back-to-back wins over the weekend was a direct result of a defense that was downright parsimonious. Just the way Scrooge likes it.

In Friday's 54-41 win over Emmaus High School, head coach Jeff Jones said they met the Green Hornets with a full-court press, extending their...

Cody Rinkus bagged a hat trick, and Matt Emerick added two goals and an assist to fuel Whitehall/Salisbury (2-6-3) to an upset win over Northampton (6-6-1) on senior night last Monday at Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.

"It was awesome," the senior Rinkus said on the win. "It's been a rough season for us, just to get this tonight, it was a big win."
