Pete's Top-10 Parkland is number-one

Wednesday, September 4, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

So, what did we learn from week one of football. Well, one thing for sure is that there are a lot of bad teams out there. On the bright side, Dieruff has actually improved and that should give everyone on the East Side a feel good story. Whitehall came away with the most surprising win last week, while Liberty kicked off the John Truby era with a big win.

Major showdowns across the board in the LVC and Colonial League this week, which makes for an interesting poll.

Newly-minted head coach John Conrad had to get into the swing of things rather quickly.

After new head coach John Szerencsits stepped down right before the start of the 2013 Zephyr golf season, Conrad was tapped to lead the program.

Szerencsits had replaced Curt Beer who guided the program the last two years, Conrad said that since he was a member of the coaching staff, Whitehall Athletic Director Robert Hartman asked him to lead the program.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Nearly a year ago, Chris Polony opened the season as Villanova's starting quarterback in their season opener.

The former Whitehall standout had laid a solid foundation the previous year when he strung together a series of impressive showing as a starter and reliever down the stretch for the Wildcats as they waded through a 2-9 season. He finished the year by completing 69 of 110 attempts for 713 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions.

But when Polony struggled during...

Wednesday, August 28, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

As the Zephyr football team heads into the 2013 season, they'll have an early test to see where they stand right out of the chute.

They'll be facing Spring-Ford High School once again to kick off the year, a tough nonconference opponent who went 12-3 last year before being bounced out of the PIAA AAAA playoffs by Coatesville High School in the second round.

Whitehall head coach Brian Gilbert said that the Zephs will start senior Jeff Charles under center, while junior Chad Rex...

Social media can reveal some surprises, some embarrassing, others troubling, but in Elliot Mortimer's case, his revelation was welcome news.

Mortimer learned he was selected the District 11 pitcher of the year from a high school baseball website via Twitter.

"No one ever came to me and said I won the award," said Mortimer who is preparing for his freshman season at York College. "I found out on Twitter."

The website, Prep Baseball Report (PBR), frequently had scouts at...

The 2013 Lehigh Valley Keystone State Games Junior Division baseball team won the silver medal by going 3-1 in the KSG pool play last weekend. That 3-1 mark qualified the LV squad for the gold medal game against an undefeated West team, which proved to be the end of the road for the LV, as the West team proved to be the tournament champion with an 8-2 win over LV to claim the gold medal.

Despite the finish, LV assistant coach Ted Plessl was happy about the end result for the LV team...

LVC extends invite to MVC

Wednesday, August 21, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Finally, the Lehigh Valley Conference and Mountain Valley Conference appear to be joining forces.

During an LVC meeting on Wednesday morning, Aug. 14, league officials formally ratified their constitution to allow expansion.

It was the final hurdle from an LVC standpoint in order to move forward to join forces with the MVC to form the proverbial "super conference" that folks in the Lehigh Valley have been hearing about for months.

Stroudsburg principal and MVC president...
