Zephs battle to the end vs. PHS

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Even though their last league game was a loss to Parkland High School, it reinforced the notion that the Zephyr softball team will battle to the end.

Trailing 5-0 as the final inning got under way, head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend said they mounted a rally, loading the bases in an effort to get on the scoreboard. While they failed to get a run across, they still battled until that final out.

"They never gave up and they continued fighting for the whole game," said Berg-Townsend...

Girls make districts

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Whitehall softball coach Alexis Berg-Townsend always has a theme to galvanize the team as they embark on a new season, but as their fortunes changed this year, she changed that message to fit the situation.

"Our team word has always been consistency, and now the last couple of games it's been urgency," said Berg-Townsend whose team was in danger of missing the playoffs before their late-season turnaround. "That's what we're taking in with us to each game and each practice."

Outdoorsmen should be aware of tick bites

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

With anglers casting for trout along grassy-banked streams and woodlots, and spring gobbler hunters sitting in front of tree's, this makes them all susceptible to the dreaded tick bite.

Since we had a mild winter snow wise, ticks are already active and abundant and will readily attach themselves to sportsmen and sports ladies traipsing these areas.

Ticks, according to the Center for Disease Control, are often classified as either hard or soft ticks. Hard ticks are often found...

Whitehall in LVC playoff for first time

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With prom season officially here, the Whitehall baseball team has an engagement later this month that could see them getting some early dance lessons.

While it remains to be seen whether or not they'll be celebrating a Lehigh Valley Conference championship - which may include a few impromptu moves on the diamond - the mere fact that they're earned a spot is an historic feat for the Whitehall baseball program. It marks the first time a team has qualified for the LVC playoffs since the...

Girls fall to EHS, PHS

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Zephyr girls track team had some strong performances when they met Emmaus and Parkland High Schools last week, but it wasn't enough to overtake them in the final stretch.

The girls dropped the two meets by identical scores, losing 90-60 to their Lehigh Valley Conference rivals.

While it was a tough way to close out the season, head coach Jim Sebesta said that it was a valiant effort considering both the Trojans and Green Hornets were undefeated in Lehigh Valley Conference...

The Zephyr boys track team split their engagements with the Trojans and the Green Hornets last week, relying on a jet burst from the sprints to get the one win.

The loss came at the hands of Parkland High School who tripped up the Zephs, winning 105-45. That same meet they dealt Emmaus High School a blow, bolting to a 88-62 win.

Sprinter John Johnson helped to lay the foundation for the victory against Emmaus High School, taking first in the 200 meters with a 23.2 mark, and...

Staying hot Zephs survive CCHS rally and hold on to win

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Zephyrs baseball team withstood a seventh-inning rally to record another victory this season, keeping them well positioned for a shot at a league title.

With runners on first and second, Allentown Central Catholic's Zach Tobash strolled to the plate. He had all ready launched two balls over the fence, and was looking to make it one more which would have tied the game.

That didn't faze reliever Elliot Mortimer who got the last out with a whiff, preserving the win for the...

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Where there's smoke, there's fire and the news of a Lehigh Valley superconference finally came to fruition last week.

After months of rumors and speculation about the future of the Lehigh Valley Conference, the Mountain Valley Conference stepped in and sent out an invitation to 12 neighboring schools to ultimately form a "big school, super conference," according to Stroudsburg Principal and MVC President Jeff Sodl.

All of the current LVC members, except for Bethlehem Catholic...
