WHS wrestlers hope to be hitting their stride

The Whitehall wrestling team is rounding into shape, placing first at a recent tournament, and winning another match as they gear up for the postseason.

The Zephs fared well at the Lackawanna Trail Invitational wrestling tournament last Saturday, capturing first place with 206 points, easily outdistancing second-place finisher Valley View High School who ended with 161.

The Zephyr boys basketball team was in need of a little boost when they clashed with the Patriots on Tuesday.

It wasn't an energy drink, or a protein bar they were grasping for, but a way to close the gap against a talented Freedom team that bolted out to an early lead. However, they managed to keep it close, staying within striking distance for most of the game.

Before the Whitehall girls basketball team stepped on then floor to play a league rival, they paused to remember someone who meant a lot to their program.

That moment was reserved for teammate Hannah Bankos who lost her battle with cancer in February, 2012. Bankos, who would have been a senior this year, retains a prominent place in their collective memory, and they celebrated that relationship before Tuesday's game against Freedom High School.

Scholar athletes from Bethlehem high schools dominated the 2012 Lehigh Valley Soccer Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet Sunday.

Winning the top female and male awards were Bridget M. Smith of Becahi and Alec J. Talsania of Moravian Academy.

Powerful Parkland came to town and swept Whitehall in swimming. The girls won 113-57 while the boys won 127-41.

Two pool records were set by the Trojans in the win. Erin Jordan had a time of 5:09.26 in the 500 free for the girls while Chris Strauss set the boys mark also in the 500 free with a time of 4:45.79.

The Whitehall girls basketball team found the recipe for success and served Dieruff High School with a loss on Tuesday.

The 45-34 win over the Huskies ends their nine-game skid and gets them back in the win column with a chance to pad their record with a win over Bethlehem Catholic on Friday. It's also a chance for them to avenge an early season loss to the Golden Hawks, dropping their opening game, 48-31.

Cody Rinkus bagged a hat trick, and Matt Emerick added two goals and an assist to fuel Whitehall/Salisbury (2-6-3) to an upset win over Northampton (6-6-1) on senior night last Monday at Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.
