LVC Champions!

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

When Elliot Mortimer made a leaping stab of the baseball to begin the game-ending double play at last week's Lehigh Valley Conference Baseball Championships, his immediate intention was to revel in the moment with battery mate Ryan Bonshak.

However, the senior pitcher never made it that far, getting tackled by another jubilant teammate.

"Before I got there, I got hit from behind by Jeff Charles and that started the dog pile," said Mortimer.

Buried underneath this...

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

It's a destination they strive for as soon as they step onto the track to start the season, and for a few Zephyrs that journey has turned into a reality.

The place is Shippensburg University, site of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Track and Field Championships. It will be the next stop for Angela Stella who qualified for the state tourney after posting a 2:18.30 mark in the 800 at last week's District XI AAA Track and Field Championships held at Blue Mountain...

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Fresh off a league championship, the Zephyr baseball team will try to build on history by adding a district championship to their 2013 résumé.

The district playoffs get under way May 22 for the Zephyrs (19-2), who enter the tourney as the number-one seed, hosting Freedom High School (13-8) in pursuit of a second title.

While a Lehigh Valley Conference Baseball Championship was a first, they won a District 11 4A title in 2008, defeating Liberty 11-10 to claim that crown.

Emmaus walked into Whitehall's gymnasium Tuesday night sporting Hawaiian outfits. Whitehall came into their home gym equipped with confidence.

No matter how they entered the District 11 3A volleyball semifinals, both came out on top.

The Zephyrs and Green Hornets each pulled off upset victories to set up a scrappy district championship tonight, back at Whitehall, for a 7 p.m. tip.

Emmaus shocked top-seeded, LVC champion, Parkland in four games (23-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-18...

Landowners now protected from liability

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

For landowners who are reluctant to allow hunting on their property, Senate Bill 648 sponsored by Pennsylvania Senator Alloway, now protects them from liability for actions of others.

The Bill received final passage on May 8 by a vote of 49-0. It amends the Game and Wildlife Code (Title 34) to ensure landowners who allow hunting on their property to not be subject to prosecution for Code violations committed by the hunters whom the landowner has allowed to hunt. The Bill also states...

Girls fall to Mounties

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Alexis Berg-Townsend has always contended that a team wants to be playing its best softball at the end of the season.

That was certainly the case this year when the Zephyrs posted six wins in their last seven games to assure themselves a spot in the district playoffs. It was an outcome that hinged on them rising to the occasion after a rocky start.

However, the Zephs couldn't sustain that momentum when they hosted Stroudsburg High School to open the District 11 4A playoffs....
