Zephs had a good season

Thursday, November 29, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The 2012 football season proved to be a year of pulling out the Sharpie and making bold check marks for the Zephyrs.

Coming into the season, new head coach Brian Gilbert enumerated their goals, beginning with winning a Lehigh Valley Conference Championship. Under his guidance, the team fulfilled that mission, earning a share of the LVC crown, and losing only one conference game in the process. That was the check mark with the fattest stroke, winning a league title for the first time...

Hockey team falls to Green Hornets

Thursday, November 29, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

Gavin Carey (Salisbury) tapped in a centered pass from his brother Ian to put the Whitehall/Salisbury hockey team in front late in the first period. There wasn't much time to celebrate, however, as four second period goals from Emmaus shifted the momentum towards a 5-2 Green Hornets win.

"We were feeling pretty confident," said head coach Rich Crowley. "We know we're not a high scoring team, so we get one goal and a bit of momentum."

Whitehall/Salisbury (1-5-2) was again kept...

Scoring a buck could be tougher

Thursday, November 29, 2012 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

After Monday's general deer season opener when 750,000 orange clad hunters took to Penn's Woods, there will have been some successful hunters and not so successful ones. If the former, hunter numbers will decline somewhat, however, so will buck numbers, which makes scoring on one a lot tougher.

Deer have a way to become scarce when hunters invade their home turf. They'll either go underground or move elsewhere when the going gets tough.

Case in point, most Lehigh County deer...

Shafnisky co-MVP

Tuesday, November 20, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Success on the football field for the 2012 Zephyr football team paved the way for postseason honors for a number of players.

The Zephs placed five players on the Lehigh Valley Interscholastic Conference all-star team, a direct reflection of posting eight wins and winning a share of the league title.

The league's highest honor went to quarterback Nick Shafnisky who was named the Most Valuable Player. He shared that distinction with Allentown Central Catholic running back Colin...

Volleyball team made strides in 2012

Tuesday, November 20, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With the volleyball season packed away for the winter, the Zephyr girls look to build on the positives they displayed this year.

Coming into the year, head coach Robert Gardner defined them as scrappy. Although outsized, and short on varsity experience, they put that label to use, winning seven games in a tough conference that boasts some powerhouse teams.

That effort landed them a bit short, missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. However, the team made some...

District 11 notes provided by Duke Helm

Pleasant Valley-Parkland

Pleasant Valley's Brandon Leap became the first Bear to throw for over 2,000 yards in a season. In doing so, he broke Derrik Walling's 2-year-old school record of 1,978 yards that he set in 2010. Leap now has 2,035 yards passing with 22 TD passes. Walling still holds the school record for TD passes in a season with 23.

Teammate Andrew Romeo has 35 catches for 735 yards and 12 TDs this year. The 735 yards...

Ice hockey gets first win

Thursday, November 15, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

The team may not consist of players from the same school, but there is no lack of chemistry on the ice this winter hockey season thus far.

Head coach Rich Crowly has athletes from Salisbury and Whitehall, but couldn't be happier with the camaraderie of this unit. Three consecutive goals, and superb play out of Tristen Collins in net led Whitehall/Salisbury to its first victory of the young season.

"It's coming together now," Crowly said. "We had a slow start, going 0-2-2....

Girls poised for 2013

Thursday, November 15, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

While the 2012 field hockey season brought some changes, the Zephyrs still managed to position themselves for postseason titles.

The most significant change was at the top. First-year coach Emily Repsher guided the Zephs to an 12-8 record, with appearances in both the Lehigh Valley Conference Championships and the District XI playoffs.

While conference and district titles eluded them, they still made 2012 a successful season and are poised to come back strong in 2013.

Zephs suffer disappointing, OT loss

Thursday, November 15, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With two potent offenses trading touchdowns in a game that had its share of out-of-your-seat moments, the Whitehall and Delaware Valley football teams needed an extra session to decide a winner.

The last moment when fans stood in either sheer joy or resounding heartbreak was after Warrior quarterback Bryan Schor found Martin Strenk for the two-point conversion, lifting Del Val to the 46-45 victory.

For Whitehall, that moment was met with the realization that their season was...
