Coplay off to slow start

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

It's fair to say that the start of the 2013 Lehigh Valley Legion season for manager Louis Falco has been very frustrating.

The team is currently 2-7, placing them firmly in the ninth spot of the 10-team league.

"It's very disappointing," said Falco who is getting ready for a hectic week with his team scheduled to play four games in the next six days.

The source of that disappointment stems from a number of areas. Falco said the team is suffering from too many mental...

Fullerton waiting to see its full potential

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Just like his Coplay counterpart, Fullerton Legion manager Daniel Delp has yet to reap the consistent benefits of a full complement of players.

"We've had only one game this year when we had our entire roster on hand," said Delp.

That means they've had to adjust, sometimes putting players in unfamiliar spots which has been a challenge this season. Still, Delp said he's been fortunate since a few of his players, including Ryan Bonshak, Matt Bonshak, Zach Delp, Tyler Correll and...

The McDonald's All-Star Football Classic is set to kickoff again this Thursday night at Nazareth's Andrew Leh Stadium. For the 43rd season, the annual charity event brings together players and coaches from across the Lehigh Valley to play one final high school contest for a good cause.

It also brings players together to compete for one last victory.

That's the case for everyone involved in Thursday's encounter, as the charity contest is built upon the foundation for a good...

Signing Day

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Editor's note: This is part one is a series of stories about the recent spring signees at Whitehall.

With pens firmly in their hands, another group of Whitehall High School student-athletes inked their intentions to continue their athletic careers at area colleges.

This group represented the final collection of Whitehall student-athletes to formalize their future plans. It was also the biggest group since the signing period began, with 13 students adding their names to the...

Lehigh Valley rolls over Delaware South

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was a torrid start for the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team Monday afternoon, as they torched Delaware South 11-3 in the opener of the 16-team tournament at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia.

The Lehigh Valley blew things open with a four-run third inning, helping them take a 5-0 lead into the fourth, which only ballooned following a two-run double by Tyler Buskirk to help build a 7-0 lead for the Lehigh Valley.

In total, the Lehigh Valley pelted Delaware South's pitching...

Volleyball will move forward with loss of 10 seniors

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Whitehall's volleyball season came to an end before it would have liked, but the Zephyrs have plenty to look back on as they concluded their 2013 campaign.

Finishing up with a 13-6 record, along with an appearance in the district finals and the state tournament, gave Whitehall a season to be proud of, but the Zephyrs may always look back on the season and ask, "what if," in regards to letting a fifth game slip away from them against Emmaus in the District 11 3A championship.

Great season! But pitching staff takes a hit next year due to graduation

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

It was a remarkable season for the Zephyr baseball team, claiming a piece of history and getting to the district finals.

For manager Shaun O'Boyle, coming to the field every day and watching his players perform was an experience he'll never forget.

"It was fantastic," said O'Boyle who just completed his third year as skipper. "I told them you'll go down as one of the best teams ever at Whitehall."

The numbers certainly back that up.

The Zephs were 22-3 and won a...

Girls battled to the end

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With another softball season in the books, the Zephyrs will say good-bye to a number of players who made an impact on the program, and then look ahead to the future with some returning talent.

Whitehall finished the season 11-10, made the District 11 playoffs, and lost in the opening round of the district tourney to Stroudsburg High School, ending their season.

Those are the hard facts.

But the story behind the statistics is what made the 2013 campaign a tribute to...
