Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Allison Emick plans to continue her swimming career in the future, but she had a hard time ending her current one.

Emick was one of nine seniors who ended their regular season as a member of the Whitehall girls' swimming program this spring, a campaign that was a memorable one in many ways. Three of her teammates - one senior - advanced to the PIAA state meet last weekend at Bucknell.

For Emick, it was the end of a productive and unforgettable time in her life.

Tough start hurt girls

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

As the Whitehall girls basketball season unfolded, head coach Rick Worman said his team had a difficult time taking advantage of their opportunities to win games down the stretch.

Now that the season is over, that inability to "get over the hump" kind of summed up the year for the Zephyrs. They finished the year at 4-18.

While they stayed competitive in most of those games, they just couldn't get that deciding shot, or that crucial turnover that may have changed their fortunes...

Wrestlers will return some key members

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With the wrestling mats stored until next winter, the Zephyr grapplers will look to build on another successful season that saw them make steady progress throughout the year.

As head coach Tim Cunningham reflected upon the year, he noted that their progress was steady and slow. He's always viewed the season using the metaphor of a long-distance run, equating it with a marathon that rewards perseverance and durability.

He guided his young team through some early tests against...

Boys hoping groundwork laid

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With another boys basketball season completed, the Zephyrs demonstrated a resiliency that took them into the playoffs, an experience that will hopefully lay the groundwork for the future.

As the season unfolded, the Zephs were struggling for consistency, trying to incorporate a lot of new faces into a line-up that lost most of its starters to graduation. It took a while to get their footing as they were mired in a 4-6 mark to start the season.

However, head coach Jeff Jones...

Nemeth's passion for swimming grew

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

As the season wound down, Abby Nemeth slowly has been realizing her high school swimming career was coming to its end. She wasn't among those who advanced to districts recently, but being out of the limelight hasn't bothered her.

Yet, it has been a classic case of one door closing and another door opening for her.

The Whitehall senior initially joined the program during her freshman year as an after-school outlet, but she soon developed a true passion for the sport.

Zephs have strong showing

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Whitehall track and field team didn't spend the winter hibernating, only to emerge once the clink of starting blocks sounded the arrival of spring at the Zephyr Sports Complex.

No, they were honing their skills during the bleak days of winter, competing at Albright College in Reading as well as Kutztown University.

Head coach Jim Sebesta said the Zephs averaged about 40 kids during the winter indoor season, the majority of whom were newcomers trying to get acclimated to...

Last weekend at the PIAA District 11 Class 3A swimming meet, Whitehall head coach Pete Rile admittedly had fun.

The veteran coach watched both his girls and boys squads have one of the more successful performances in district history for the school last weekend. The girls' team broke six schools records in seven swims, and the boys' team broke three school records. Overall, the girls' finished sixth in the 17 team field with 193 total points and the boys took 13th-place finish with 54...

Bonshak just short of states

Wednesday, March 6, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

It may not have been the finish Matt Bonshak envisioned at the start of the season, but when it ended last week at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium, the senior wrestler concluded an extraordinary career at Whitehall High School.

In a scenario that was reminiscent of the District XI tournament, Bonshak once again faced Northampton's Bobby Fehr in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Northeast Regional AAA Tournament.

Bonshak said that all week he...
