Pete's Top-10

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

We're into week four of the poll and not much has changed on the forefront. Easton maintains their stay at the top, while Nazareth gets a bump. Parkland picked up their first win of the year and Catasauqua looks to keep their Colonial League title aspirations rolling.

What's your team in store for this week? Check out the poll below.

1. Easton (3-0)

Last week's rank: #1

Of all the teams in the league, Easton always seems to not have a hard time so far this year....

Girls get through challenging week

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

It may have been a taxing week for the Whitehall field hockey team, but it was their opponents who ultimately paid the price.

After a tough week in which they faced a trio of talented league foes, the Zephs breathed a little sigh of relief, edging out Easton Area High School 3-2 to complete the sweep.

The home win against the Red Rovers extends their record to 6-1 and sets up a highly anticipated rematch against undefeated Emmaus High School on Tuesday. (That game was postponed...

Zephs have way with FHS

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

So far it's been bad news for Bethlehem schools to make their way to Zephyr Stadium on Friday nights.

Freedom High School was the latest casualty in that exercise, losing 42-21, in a game that was a bit more competitive than the final score indicated.

The Zephs took advantage of some Patriot miscues, including a key interception by Ryan Bonshak which was turned into a pick six, as well as a bad punt snap deep in Freedom territory that ultimately resulted in a score which helped...

WHS girls still optimistic

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

If the third game in Friday's match against Liberty High School is any indication of future success, than the Zephyr volleyball team has plenty of optimism looking forward.

In that game, the Zephs rallied from an early 7-0 deficit as they kept chipping away, eventually tying the game at 17.

With their confidence growing, and the "Canes committing a number of errors, Whitehall started to climb ahead of the taller squad from Bethlehem. In fact, they reeled off four unanswered...

Zephs notch first win

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Last Friday's win over Liberty High School by the Zephyr football team was filled with enough subplots to satisfy any number of amateur sleuths.

While it really wasn't a mystery how the Zephs dismantled the Hurricanes 38-19, the plot lines swirling around the game were enough to fill up a good Who-Run-It … er … make that a Who-Done It.

First, it was the Zephyrs home opener and that's always a big deal for a school that's produced a number of renowned football players.

Volleyball team gets by K-Kids

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

The Whitehall volleyball team experienced some ups and down this week as league play got into full swing.

The up was a five-game thriller against Northampton Area High School. The Zephs battled back from a two-game deficit, winning the last two games to seal the victory. The end result was a 25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-12, toppling of the Kids to earn their first league win.

It was a roller coaster of emotions as they had to fight through that middle stretch that tested...

Kuhn and Tock having great year

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Olivia Kuhn and Nicole Tock etch their names in the annals of Whitehall's girls' tennis program, but fate has brought the duo together for a memorable and surely unforgettable season.

At the end of last week's play, both Kuhn and Tock, the Zephyrs' number three doubles team, had an unblemished 8-0 record and had incurred some obstacles in reaching the peak. It can easily also be considered a remarkable achievement considering this is the first season the duo has played doubles...

Golfers look to finish strong

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With the golf season winding down, the Zephyrs have veered off course, but are now searching for a little momentum on the back three.

The Zephs got off to a fast start, registering two early wins, but since that time, they haven't been able to crack the win column and currently sit at 2-9. With three matches remaining, they would like to knock that total up a stroke, and will look to do that this week against Northampton Area High School.

Head coach Curt Beer said the team's...

Girls piling up the goals

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Whitehall head girls' soccer coach George Romano understands his team can't keep a low profile this season, especially in the ever-competitive Lehigh Valley Conference (LVC).

The Zephyrs have returned a healthy crop of players from last year's Class 3A state runner up squad and haven't really missed a beat. Through their first four games, Whitehall had a sterling 4-0 mark and had outscored their opponents by a 25-2 margin, but they had a tight 2-1 victory over Nazareth.
