Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Lightning may have hampered the second day of the Lehigh Valley Conference /Colonial League Track and Field Championships, but it didn't dampen the effort by the Zephyrs who were able to put together a strong performance.

The boys finished in fifth place with 65 points, while the girls earned the eighth spot with 46.50 points. The Championships were won on the boys side by Parkland High School, and by Emmaus High School for the girls.

Head coach Jim Sebesta said that the boys...

Brader hosts football camp featuring Liberty stars

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

With the gluttony of football camps available to high school players and the growing importance of position specific drills to football coaches at the higher levels, Jason Brader thinks he's filled a need.

Brader, the owner FASST Performance in Quakertown, is holding a camp on May 18 from 10am-3pm at the Bethlehem Steelers Youth Field off Schoenersville Rd. in Bethlehem.

The camp is open to football players from ninth grade up until incoming seniors. It's also specifically for...

Wloczewski helps blank EHS

Friday, May 17, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Editor's note - Wednesday's LVC final game against Parkland comes after Press deadlines. Look for coverage of the game in next week's edition.

When pitcher Jacob Wloczewski drew the opening round game of the Lehigh Valley Conference Championships, he knew that the adrenaline would be pumping on both benches.

He used that knowledge to his advantage as he tossed a shutout against Emmaus High School at Hackett Park in Easton, sending the Zephyrs into the championship game on...

Girls soccer visits Antigua

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

A trip to the Caribbean is always a nice jaunt away from the daily mundane of work or school. Throw in some soccer and community service and the Whitehall girls' soccer team enjoyed one of their most memorable trips ever.

Whitehall girls' coach George Romano had 14 players join him, along with parents and Athletic Director Bob Hartman, from April 26-29 that saw them play against Antigua's U-17 and U-20 women's national teams, as well as do some charity work at the Willkies Primary...

Zephs battle to the end vs. PHS

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Even though their last league game was a loss to Parkland High School, it reinforced the notion that the Zephyr softball team will battle to the end.

Trailing 5-0 as the final inning got under way, head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend said they mounted a rally, loading the bases in an effort to get on the scoreboard. While they failed to get a run across, they still battled until that final out.

"They never gave up and they continued fighting for the whole game," said Berg-Townsend...

New species of bass found

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

If you're an avid bass fisherman, did you know there's a new species of black bass swimming in southeast waters according to the Outdoor Pressroom.

Scientists from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have discovered these new species while DNA testing a species found in Florida's Chipola River in 2007. The accompanying photo of the bass, that is destined to be called the "Choctaw bass" (more on that later), was collected from Florida's Holmes Creek in February 2012....

LVC likely to stay together

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Lehigh Valley Conference officials had a chance to meet last week to discuss the future of the league and some clarity is now coming into focus. The league met on Monday in an emergency meeting to discuss the Mountain Valley Conference invitation of 10 of the league's schools, while excluding Bethlehem Catholic and Central Catholic.

Principal's and athletic directors met last Wednesday as well in a regularly scheduled meeting and all indicators point to the LVC staying intact with all...

The District 11 3A volleyball tournament is set to kick off tonight and tomorrow with first round action with Whitehall and Delaware Valley playing in tonight's only opening match of the tournament.

The Zephyrs grabbed the sixth-seed and travel to third-seeded Delaware Valley tonight.

Girls make districts

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

Whitehall softball coach Alexis Berg-Townsend always has a theme to galvanize the team as they embark on a new season, but as their fortunes changed this year, she changed that message to fit the situation.

"Our team word has always been consistency, and now the last couple of games it's been urgency," said Berg-Townsend whose team was in danger of missing the playoffs before their late-season turnaround. "That's what we're taking in with us to each game and each practice."

Whitehall in LVC playoff for first time

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With prom season officially here, the Whitehall baseball team has an engagement later this month that could see them getting some early dance lessons.

While it remains to be seen whether or not they'll be celebrating a Lehigh Valley Conference championship - which may include a few impromptu moves on the diamond - the mere fact that they're earned a spot is an historic feat for the Whitehall baseball program. It marks the first time a team has qualified for the LVC playoffs since the...
