With visions of three pointers dancing in their head, the Zephyrs boys basketball team settled in for a savory victory over Pleasant Valley High School last week.

The Zephs unleashed a wellspring of offense on the Bears, ringing in a 65-33 win. They kept their foot on the accelerator for most of the game, applying both offensive and defensive pressure to record their third win. The win also helped ease the memory of a disappointing loss to Parkland High School the previous evening, as...

Ceasar enjoying swimming more every year

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

When she was younger, Vicky Ceasar swam in organized programs as a complement to playing soccer. Over the years, her affection and interest in the sports reversed their roles as she began to spend more time in the pool rather than on the field.

In recent years, former teammate and graduate Allison Coe finally turned the tide toward swimming for the current Whitehall senior.

"She (Coe) had a big influence over me," said Ceasar. "She (Coe) really pushed me to work hard. I owe a...

Title streak ends for Zephs in Classic

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

When the opposition's scoreboard numbers start to eclipse Social Security eligibility ages, Jeff Jones knows his team is in trouble.

The Zephyr head basketball coach has often stated that his team must keep their opponent under 60 points to have an opportunity to win.

While they may occasionally get into a high-scoring swap with an opponent, the optimum is to keep a team in the 50s.

It's a formula that's been a staple of his tenure.

"Our focal point has always...

Girls looking for patience

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

It's been a tough stretch for the Whitehall girls basketball team, and they're going to need a little patience to turn their fortunes around.

After dropping four consecutive games, head coach Rick Worman attributes some of those losses to being impatient on offense. He said they need to hold onto the ball a little longer, looking for an open shot. He chalks some of that impatience on having a young team, so he's hopeful they'll remedy that situation once they gain more experience....

Gilson already eyes return to states

Wednesday, December 26, 2012 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

One of Brooke's Gilson's goals for the Whitehall swimming season is to get back to states for the third consecutive season, her last opportunity as she recently began her senior season.

Chances are and barring injury, Gilson will likely return later this winter. In the meantime, she plans to make the most of the season for herself and her Zephyr teammates.

With a solid core returning, Whitehall's girls' team should be a contender for the Lehigh Valley Conference crown.

Bumpy start

Wednesday, December 26, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

With the Holiday season upon us, the Whitehall wrestling team looks to unwrap a few league wins once the break is over.

It's been of a bumpy start for the Zephyrs, losing their opening bout to Bethlehem Catholic High School, 71-6. The lone win was a forfeit at 106. That was followed by another league match as they hooked up with the Konkrete Kids, another perennial Lehigh Valley Conference powerhouse. While it was another loss, dropping their season record to 0-2, the team battled...

Boys beat K-Kids

Thursday, December 20, 2012 by STEVE ANDRES Special to the Press in Sports

When the Zephyr boys basketball team opened league play last Friday, they dusted off that old sports axiom and found a way to win.

With the score tied at 31 heading into the final quarter, the Zephs clamped down their defense and amped up their offense, securing a 46-34 over Northampton Area High School win in front of their home crowd to open Lehigh Valley Conference action.

The ability to pull away in the waning minutes was a familiar scenario, having posted a similar...
