Tough loss for tennis

It was a grueling four-hour match in the heat, and head coach Whitehall girls tennis coach Alex Green was hoping his team could come up with an improbable win in their opener

They were facing Liberty to start the season on their home court, and the midday sun was relentless. It was the type of day where spectators sought shelter in any sliver of shade available.

As the match began, Whitehall’s top two singles players began to assert control. The Zephyr pair eventually prevailed at No.1 and No.2 singles as both Natalia Pedraza and Noel Yacoub won in straight sets.

Zephyrs ready to take on Eastburg South in Week 1

With a good offseason and a new system in place, Whitehall is anxious to shake the rust from a 2-8 season last year.

The Zephyrs will get their first shot and have a true test when they host East Stroudsburg South for their opener Friday night.

New head coach Matt Senneca has increased the tempo in camp, and he was pleased with their first showing in a tri-scrimmage against Lehighton and Notre Dame.

BML baseball title goes to the Bulls again

Limeport head coach Mike Cudwadie and plenty of other Bulls remember when Northampton swept them in the championship series in its first season of the Blue Mountain League (BML). That was back in 2014.

Jorge Montes doesn’t recall the deflating feeling five years ago. Montes is from Puerto Rico, and recently moved back to the Lehigh Valley area in 2017.

Are you going through ‘Pig withdrawal yet?

The IronPigs haven’t played a home game since July 7 and they won’t be back home for another week yet, leaving Coca-Cola Park empty for 15 straight days. The current 11-game road trip saw the ‘Pigs fly from Rochester to Gwinnett Sunday night to start a four-game series against the Stripers.

With the gang out of town, it’s a good time to take a look at some former IronPigs who have also flown out of town, only on a more permanent basis.

Coplay ousted in Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs

The season ended last week for the Coplay Senior Legion baseball team, bowing out of the league playoffs against Salisbury.

Coplay dropped out of the playoffs, according to the league, prior to their game with Salisbury, giving Salisbury the victory.

Prior to that game, they faced the Carbon Monarchs in the opening round and lost 11-1 behind Brad Buzzard’s six-RBI performance. With the two losses, Coplay was eliminated from the playoffs. Austin Miller went 2-3 in the loss.

They finished the season 5-12-1.

Zephs had a strong second half

Whitehall’s 2019 baseball season was marked by a strong second half, culminating in appearances in both the league and district playoffs.

The Zephyrs postseason saw them contending for a district title this season, marking the second time in the last three years that they’ve been in the District XI 5A finals. After mounting a late rally, they fell to Blue Mountain in the D-11 Championships, losing 6-4.

It was quite an accomplishment for a team that was staring at a 4-7 record after losing to Stroudsburg on April 17.

Stiles summer basketball league still going strong

While most summer basketball leagues have struggled or fallen by the wayside, the Stiles League continues to be a viable option.

The 10-team league, which plays on Mondays and Wednesdays, is winding down it season toward the beginning of its postseason July 24.

“We are doing well,” said league director Robbie Roberts, who is in sixth year at the helm. “Since I have been here, we have been as high as 11 (teams) and been as low as eight. We have been at 10 teams the last three years.

Coplay set for playoffs

Coplay will be among the eight Lehigh Valley Senior Legion baseball teams vying for the league title when the playoffs get underway this Wednesday.

The double-elimination tournament may have a distinct favorite on paper with South Parkland sporting an undefeated 14-0 record, but Coplay could play spoiler once they take the field.

Coplay ended the regular season 5-9-1, finishing in the fifth spot in the standings. They head into the playoffs off a resounding 15-5 victory over Emmaus last Sunday.

Zephs had strong season

It was another strong season for the Whitehall boys tennis team, highlighted by a deep singles championship run my senior Nick Rohn in the district tournament.

The season officially ended for Whitehall on May 6 when both of their doubles entries weren’t able to make it to the next round in the District XI 3A Doubles Championships Rohn and Nick Demjan were ousted by Southern Lehigh’s Zach Lebby and Jacob Nelson, 7-5, 6-1, while Daniel Jablonski and Daniel Lim were defeated by Liberty’s Jacob Wong and Anthony Ronca, 6-2, 6-2.
